Green Bin Cleaning

Nova Scotia's most-loved small service.

SpringSummerFallWinter

Halifax was sorting organics before most of Canada knew what a green bin was — and every summer, every green cart in the province becomes a fly hotel. Maggots, fruit-fly clouds, and a smell you can detect from the driveway. Green bin cleaning is a small service that solves a big, universal Nova Scotia problem: we collect, power-wash, sanitize, and deodorize your green cart on a schedule, so collection day stops being the worst day of your week.

On a route plan, it's a few dollars a month for a bin that never gets bad. One-off rescue cleans for the bin that's already gone sideways are the most satisfying $15 in home services.

Why the green cart is a Nova Scotia rite of summer

HRM collects source-separated organics curbside — the green cart program is one of the most established in North America. The trade-off is that for half the year your cart holds a fermenting soup of kitchen waste in Maritime humidity: fly eggs hatch, maggots colonize, and by August the smell announces itself from across the yard. Almost every Halifax household has fought this battle; almost none of them have a system.

The system is simple: clean the bin after every collection in the warm months, break the fly cycle before it restarts, and treat the interior so waste releases instead of sticking. A bin cleaned on schedule simply doesn't get maggots — the eggs and the organic film they feed on are gone each cycle. One-off "rescue" cleans fix the emergency; route plans prevent it from ever happening again.

Disposal matters here too: bin wash water is organics-contaminated wastewater, and it doesn't belong in the storm drain that runs to the harbour. Our route service captures and disposes of it correctly. It's the difference between a clean bin and a clean conscience.

How we work

Book on a route plan or one-off — address and cart placement is all we need
We arrive right after collection day (empty bins only — that's the trick)
Power-wash, sanitize, deodorize, done in minutes at the curb
Waste water captured and disposed of correctly
Bin back where it belongs, smelling like a bin that's never had a bad day

Peak season is May through October — fly season. Route plans in the warm months break the maggot cycle every cycle; winter service drops to monthly (or on-demand) since freezing temperatures do the disinfecting for free. Spring first-clean is the annual favorite: the bin that overwintered needs a fresh start.

Common questions

Do you need the bin to be empty?

Yes — we clean right after collection day. That's what makes the service effective and cheap: an empty bin takes minutes and the treatment holds until the next cycle. Route plans are timed to your street's collection schedule automatically.

What do you do with the wash water?

It's captured and disposed of as contaminated wastewater — never into the storm drain system that flows to the harbour. It's the part of the job most people never think about, and the part we're strictest about.

My bin already has maggots. Can it be saved?

That's the rescue clean, and yes — the combination of hot wash, sanitizing treatment, and deodorizing resets the bin completely. The follow-up is what saves it long-term: a route plan that keeps the cycle broken for the rest of the summer.

Does this actually stop the smell permanently?

It stops it the way maintenance stops anything: by never letting it start. A bin cleaned every cycle doesn't build the bacterial film that makes the smell. Most clients on warm-season routes report the bin becomes genuinely forgettable — the highest compliment a green cart can earn.

Can you clean my garbage and recycling bins too?

Yes — same treatment, same visit, and bin sets get bundle pricing. Garbage bins get the same summer treatment value (they carry their own film), and blue-bag bins love a spring reset.
