Gutter & Eavestrough Cleaning
The cheapest insurance your roof will ever buy.
Nova Scotia roofs take it from both sides: autumn buries every gutter in maple, oak, and birch leaf-fall over about four intense weeks, and winter turns any clog into an ice dam that pushes meltwater under your shingles and into your ceilings. Gutter cleaning is the highest-leverage, lowest-cost maintenance on this entire list.
We clear every gutter run by hand, flush downspouts until water runs free, and report anything we see from ladder height — sagging runs, detached downspouts, loose straps, or the shingle grit that tells you a roof is aging. You get photos of before and after, every visit.

Leaf drop, ice dams, and your foundation
The Halifax region's mature maples are glorious right up until the second week of November, when they drop what feels like half their weight directly into your eavestroughs. A gutter that was clean on Thanksgiving can be impassable by Remembrance Day. The rule of thumb: clean after the bulk of leaf-fall (mid-to-late November) and you enter winter with a gutter that can actually drain a January thaw.
Why it matters in January: snow on a warm roof melts, runs to the cold eave, and refreezes — an ice dam. Water pools behind it and seeps under shingles. The most common Halifax attic and ceiling stain isn't a "roof leak" at all; it's a clogged gutter holding meltwater against the eave. Clean gutters plus working downspouts are your first and cheapest line of defence.
The silent one is the downspout dumping at the foundation. In a freeze-thaw climate, water pooled against a foundation wall cycles ice expansion into every hairline crack — and in spring, the wet corner of the lawn you can't explain is often just a downspout with no extension. We check every outlet, every visit.
Pricing guide
| Scope | Typical NS range |
|---|---|
| Single-story home | $100 – $180 |
| Two-story home (standard runs) | $150 – $250 |
| Steep-pitch or long-run homes | $200 – $350 |
| Twice-a-year plan (fall + spring) | save 15% vs. two singles |
| Downspout extension install (per) | $25 – $60 |
| Leaf-guard / screen install | quoted per run |
Standard Nova Scotia rates for typical residential gutter systems. Heavily treed properties are priced honestly on sight — and the twice-a-year plan is what most Halifax homes actually need.
How we work
The big visit is mid-to-late November, after leaf-fall and before the deep freeze. The spring pass (March–April) clears winter debris and confirms downspouts before the April rains. Treed properties with early-dropping species sometimes need a late-October start — we'll tell you which calendar your trees follow.
Common questions
How often do gutters need cleaning in Nova Scotia?
Once a year minimum, on a treed Halifax property — and twice is the honest answer: after leaf-fall (late November) and after the spring thaw (March–April). Homes with mature maples, oaks, or pines right on the lot line almost always need the twice-a-year plan.
Can you clean gutters in winter?
Emergency winter clears are possible during mild stretches — for a gutter actively damming and leaking, we'll find a safe window. But the real answer is prevention: the November clean is what keeps the January thaw from becoming a ceiling stain. Book the fall clean and winter becomes a non-event.
Are gutter guards worth it?
Sometimes. Guards stop large maple leaves brilliantly; they do worse with pine needles, birch seeds, and grit, which sneak through and then can't be flushed. We'll give you an honest read on your specific tree mix — including when the answer is "save your money and keep the annual clean."
Do you check the roof while you're up there?
Yes — it's part of every visit. We flag missing shingles, cracked boots on vent pipes, sagging gutter runs, and detached straps, in a photo report. You'll know about small problems while they're still small repairs.
Why does my gutter overflow but the downspout looks clear?
The clog is usually where you can't see it: the outlet where the gutter meets the downspout, or the first elbow. That's why we flush-test every downspout with water instead of just peering into runs — "looks clear" isn't the standard; "runs clear" is.
